Depends on the movie, I guess, and Cortez definitely colors our view of the character. Yeah, I thought Morley was better than the material; she and Cortez are like imports from Pre-Code Land into a silent movie -- and given those accents, would that this were a silent! And I don't blame Beery for the film because his "Chump" role is a pretty hopeless part. In stuff like Min and Bill or The Bowery he's great fun.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9149411832127844385.post-78751460114751376662012-03-19T15:17:24.340-04:002012-03-19T15:17:24.340-04:00I started watching this on my Tivo, and stopped a ...I started watching this on my Tivo, and stopped a little into it and you're making me think I'd be better of quitting while I'm ahead. You didn't say much about Karen Morley, who I thought did pretty well in the early scenes as she navigates Beery's character (the whole episode with the locked door was kind of adorable, maybe I'm very forgiving of Beery since I love him in Treasure Island). Morely was of course Poppy in the original Scarface, and is on the cover of "Manny at the Movies" i.e. the bible. So even though she can't always act she's pretty iconic, that weird fake laugh of hers gets me every time. That said, does Ricardo Cortez EVER play anything but a shifty sweet talking gigolo? Keep up the good work, the pre-code parade RULES!Erich Kuerstenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02850572368098319317noreply@blogger.com
