I was surprised not to see Redford nominated based upon the buzz I had been hearing thus far. Bale seemed to come out of nowhere, but is perhaps more indication that Hustle is becoming more of a favorite than I would like it to be. Ejiofor really should win this award but that's my personal take. I suppose Gravity and All is Lost will remain a point of comparison for the similar themes, however I wonder if the female versus male perspective has a greater impact on the reception of the characterization for audiences, not to mention Gravity is likely the more mainstream film. I wasn't a huge fan of Hanks in Captain Phillips, but it's interesting how his "best" performance in a decade is ignored, while Streep continues to get nominated every year.
