With Secreto a more ambitious director might have dared us to question whether scenes were Esposito's authentic flashbacks or his fictions. It's effective as is and would be a crowd-pleaser if someone dared dub it, but given the interesting stuff coming out of Argentina recently I don't even know if it was that one counry's best film of 2009.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9149411832127844385.post-39061836765498013072010-05-31T18:00:31.178-04:002010-05-31T18:00:31.178-04:00Again, this is your typical outstanding work, thou...Again, this is your typical outstanding work, though this time I'll admit the subject wasn't all that successful with me. Hence, THE SECRET OF THEIR EYES, the Argentinian film that won the Best Foreign Language Film is a major disappointment, and in no way remotely deserved to win over the likes of Audiard’s masterwork, UN PROPHETE. Still, there are some interesting visual ideas, the acting is strong, and the flashback structure intriguing. But there are some clumsy segues too, and the narrative is rather long-winded and bloated. It’s a challenging film, and it’s no affront to world cinema at all, but I did find it problematic. You did acknowledge of course earlier on in your essay that few winners of the Best Foreign Film Oscar are deserving. I quite agree.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.com
