After years of focusing on Asian films, I am trying to get back to my first love, the films of the 30's through the 50's and your site has already given me a number of ideas about films I want to track down and is very informative. Thanks. I am sure Gable has his fans but I sure never come across them. Actors like Stewart, Grant, Cooper and Bogart just seem to have grown in stature while Gable has not.Brian Naashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12798896753133473887noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9149411832127844385.post-82481521299595297452013-08-27T14:58:55.161-04:002013-08-27T14:58:55.161-04:00Thanks for writing, Brian. I get what you're saying about Gable, and I wonder whether his stardom hasn't aged well because he doesn't really have an existential role that's about him or his persona. He's identified with his leading ladies, from Crawford to Vivien Leigh to Marilyn Monroe -- or with Carole Lombard in real life -- but rarely seems like the "man alone" who holds people's interest today. I bet he still has fans, though, and I hope they'll speak up for him.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9149411832127844385.post-40025490886558315982013-08-27T12:38:01.617-04:002013-08-27T12:38:01.617-04:00Thanks very much for the write-up. For reasons that I have never quite figured out I have never warmed up to Gable, not in GWTW, It Happened One Night or later films like It Happened in Naples. He has always left me cold. Such a blowhard. I could be wrong but I get the sense that is true of much of the current audience. While so many of the male stars still get a lot of love I rarely see anyone having much to say about Gable anymore and as you say he was the King for a long time. Thanks again.Brian Naashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12798896753133473887noreply@blogger.com
